Redeemer Adds Bachelor of Kinesiology to New Degree Offerings

Redeemer launches its newest degree, a Bachelor of Kinesiology, beginning this fall after gaining wider degree-granting authority in 2020.

This fall, Redeemer University will enhance its kinesiology program offerings with the addition of a bachelor of kinesiology (B.Kin.), a credential more clearly recognized in the industry.

Previously, Redeemer offered kinesiology as an honours major in the bachelor of science and bachelor of arts degree programs. As a result of the passing of Bill 213 by the Ontario Legislature in December 2020, Redeemer was enabled to grant a greater number of degrees, including the B.Kin degree.

“The bachelor of kinesiology will enhance graduate success by challenging students to honour God through a holistic study of human movement in sport, recreation, disease, and fitness, while also preparing them for professional roles in kinesiology and related fields with a clearly recognized degree credential,” said Dr. Kyle Spyksma, interim vice president, academic.

The rising popularity of B.Kin programs

Within the last decade, the B.Kin. degree has gained popularity and more universities are offering this option among their programs, in concert with, or in replacement of, BA or B.Sc. programs. The degree is becoming more and more recognized by employers, and may be of significant interest to students in the coming years, as the post-secondary landscape changes and degree-specific programs become more desirable.

“The B.Kin. program is a holistic study of human movement from a Reformed Christian perspective that contributes to student intellectual, social, and spiritual development as they prepare for their calling in the Kingdom of God to glorify God,” said Dr. Dianne Moroz, assistant professor of kinesiology and physical education. “The B.Kin. degree prepares students for a career in health or sport, as a registered kinesiologist (R.Kin.); a respected professional designation with expansive career opportunities, or for graduate studies in health, kinesiology or physical education fields.”

Other new programs at Redeemer

The addition of the B.Kin. degree to Redeemer’s offerings is happening alongside other new program offerings including a Music in Worship general major and minor, a Church Music Ministry honours major, as well as a Law and Public Policy minor.
